Chat stopped working? The 2026 account type change

What happened

Announced in April 2026 and rolled out worldwide in June, Roblox now sorts accounts into three types by age, each with different features. If your chat suddenly stopped working or a game you always played vanished from your list, this is almost certainly why.

The three account types

• Roblox Kids (ages 5–8) — the strictest. Chat is off by default, and even when a parent turns it on it is limited to the same age group or approved friends. Games are limited to an additionally reviewed catalogue.
• Roblox Select (ages 9–15) — chat unlocks gradually with age, with filters applied. Parental controls stay in place throughout.
• Standard (16+) — full chat and unrestricted game access, but only after passing an age check.

How the age check works

Two options: submit an ID document, or use facial age estimation through your camera. For minors without ID, the facial option is the practical one.

The result can come back wrong. If it does, try the ID route, or link a parent account and correct the birth date there.

What happens if you skip it

Without a completed age check you get temporary game access based on your self-declared age, but chat stays blocked — no matter what age you entered.

So "just put a higher age" does not work. The check itself has to pass.

What this means for trading

In-game trading in Adopt Me or Grow a Garden is a feature of those games, so it is not directly tied to your account type. But with chat blocked it is much harder to agree terms with someone.

There is an upside. Almost every trade scam starts with talking someone into something. With chat off you judge the trade by what is actually in the window — which is what you should be doing anyway.
